Racial Literacy 101 - Introduction Course
Our recommended introductory training explores ‘race’ and racism in the historical and contemporary context. It introduces concepts of structural/institutional racism and white privilege.
This training gives an understanding of the experiences of children and young people, both in terms of how they learn 'race' and their racialised experiences. It includes an overview of the areas which schools and education settings can begin to examine in order to build authentic inclusive communities.
Responding to incidents and feedback
There is widespread evidence of underreporting of racist incidents and concerns in educational settings.
This training will give staff an understanding of the experiences of pupils and parents in relation to reporting of racist incidents and concerns. It will give practical models and techniques for ensuring that pupils and parents needs and concerns are met.
Facilitating pupil of colour groups
Support groups for pupils of colour are an important safe space to develop their skills in connecting with and discussing their own racialised experiences, enhancing their racial literacy and navigating the realities of a racialised world.
This training is for staff who will be facilitating support groups in their educational settings. This will include a structure for workshops and skills for holding space for discussions.
Recruitment and retention of educators of colour
Recent research shows that teachers of colour are leaving the profession at a higher rate than their white colleagues. This at a time when there is a growing disparity between the racial make up of the teaching population and the pupils they teach.
This training will look at ways in which educational settings can better support the well being and development of their staff of colour. It will look at recruitment practices to increase representation in your staff body and innovative ways in which you can increase the presence of people of colour in educational roles.
